Models: Spitfire MkXVI
Design:
Built up from plans published in RCR magazíne (also available for download together with a MKIX version from Alex Pedeshenko).
Construction:
The model is built up from balsa and ply. Wing is constructed using mainly 1,5mm balsa (ribs, sheeting), 3x5mm pine spruce spars and the wings are joined together with 3mm ply. Ailerons are controlled by torque rods using one HS-55 servo. The wing is attached to the fuselage by two plastic screws. The wing is covered in tissue and dope.
The fuselage sides are from 2,5mm balsa with 3mm ply doublers in the wing saddle. The firewall and first former is 3mm ply and the rest are 3mm balsa. Top sheeting is 1,5mm and the front of the fuse, both top and bottom are shaped balsa blocks. The fuse is strengthened by triangle stock from the bottom behind the wing, closed with 2,5mm balsa and then sanded to shape.
Vertical fin is 6mm balsa sanded to shape, stab is 3mm balsa. For easier access to the batteries and ESC there is a hatch in front of the canopy and there is no need to remove the wing after each flight to change the batteries.
The fuse is also covered in tissue and nitrate dope. Exhausts are made from plastic tube. After several coats of nitrate dope the model is sprayed with acrylic primer, sanded with 600 grit sandpaper and sprayed with Tamila acrylics. The decals are from FSK (Spitfire MkIX).
For power I used a simple Graupner 6V S400 can motor, 8x Sanyo 500 mAh cells, Jeti JES 012 ESC and an APC 5,5x4,5 prop. The flight duration is around 3-4 minutes . This power combo is soon to be replaced by a Mega 16/15/5 or /6 motor with and 7x5 or 8x4 APC prop and 8x1050 KAN´s where the performance should improve significantly. LiPol is not the way to go here as there would be a problem to balance the model.
If I ever build this one again I will keep one basic thing on my mind - KEEP IT LIGHT!!!

Characteristics:
Due to the higher wing loading the model is pretty fast so this is definitely not a beginners choice. Basic aerobatic maneuvres are no problem, rolls are pretty scale, will loop from level flight and handles inverted flight as well. She will slow down for landing but be aware of stall speed. Ideal for a calm evening with no winds.
